The Lagos State Government has ordered psychiatric tests for 18 drivers arrested for driving against traffic.
The directive, issued by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), forms part of a broader effort to check road lawlessness and improve safety.
LASTMA said the drivers were caught engaging in one-way driving, which the agency described as a “reckless and deliberate violation” of the law.
Apart from prosecution, each driver will undergo a mental health evaluation to assess their fitness to use the road.
LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, explained the move aligns with global safety standards.
“The enforcement of psychiatric assessments is not intended to stigmatise or punish. Rather, it is a necessary intervention designed to protect the general motoring public from individuals who exhibit reckless disregard for human life and lawful order,” Bakare-Oki said.

He added that despite ongoing awareness campaigns, one-way driving remains a serious issue in Lagos.
According to LASTMA, the offence regularly leads to avoidable accidents, traffic jams, and destruction of public facilities.
Bakare-Oki said the state sees this measure as both a deterrent and a chance to correct dangerous behaviour.
“This initiative goes beyond traffic enforcement. It reflects the state’s vision to safeguard lives, promote responsible motoring, and maintain order on our roads,” he added.
