Lagos Partners Global Firms to Transform Waste into Energy, Targets Zero Landfill Use

In line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ agenda, the Lagos State Government has announced a major shift from its traditional linear waste management system to a cyclical, technology-driven model aimed at achieving zero landfill use.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this on Thursday via his official X handle, noting that the initiative is anchored on strategic partnerships designed to bring innovation and sustainability into the state’s waste sector.

According to Wahab, Lagos has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with reputable organisations to deliver on the ambitious plan. Among them is Harvest Waste Consortium of the Netherlands, which is introducing a waste treatment solution capable of converting nearly 3,000 tonnes of daily waste into energy.

Similarly, Lafarge Africa PLC will collaborate with the state in the collection and processing of non-recyclable combustible waste across Lagos and its landfill sites. JONSPONG Group of Companies is also partnering with the government on solid and liquid waste treatment, as well as establishing a Material Recovery Facility to reduce landfill pressure.

“The goal, alongside our modular processing efforts, is simple but ambitious: to reduce the amount of waste entering landfills to zero.
Achieving this will allow us to begin the gradual decommissioning of landfills across Lagos State,” Wahab said.

He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to a greener, cleaner Lagos, stressing that the waste-to-energy projects mark another milestone in the state’s environmental sustainability journey.
