The Lagos State Government has joined the rest of the world to mark the 2026 World Environment Day, calling on residents to take greater responsibility for protecting the environment and promoting a cleaner and healthier state.
The global observance, held annually, is designed to raise awareness about environmental protection and encourage actions that ensure the preservation of natural resources for both present and future generations.
In a post shared on his X handle on Friday, the Commissioner for the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, reaffirmed the state government’s dedication to sustainable environmental management.
He highlighted ongoing initiatives such as sanitation exercises, reforms in waste management, strict environmental law enforcement, and public awareness campaigns.
“As one of Africa’s fastest-growing megacities, Lagos remains committed to sustainable environmental practices through continuous sanitation exercises, waste management reforms, environmental enforcement, and public enlightenment campaigns aimed at creating a cleaner, healthier, and safer society,” he said.
He further emphasized that protecting the environment is a shared duty that requires the active involvement of everyone in society, including individuals, businesses, market operators, and community leaders.
“This year’s commemoration serves as a reminder that environmental protection is a shared responsibility.
Every resident, business owner, market operator, and community leader has a vital role to play in maintaining a clean environment,” the government said.

Residents were also advised to dispose of waste properly and avoid practices that could damage the environment, including blocking drainage systems or indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
Authorities noted that enforcement measures against environmental violations are being sustained across the state.
“The Lagos State Government, through its relevant agencies and environmental stakeholders, continues to intensify efforts against illegal dumpsites, street trading, open defecation, and other environmental infractions that threaten public health and urban sustainability,” the statement added.
The government also urged citizens to support ongoing initiatives aimed at strengthening sanitation and environmental discipline in communities across the state.
“We urge all residents to support government initiatives by promoting cleanliness, sanitation, recycling, and environmental discipline across our communities,” he said.
He concluded by stressing that collective action is essential in building a sustainable future for Lagos.
“Together, we can build a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable Lagos for all,” he added.
