Landmark Surgery: Stornoway Patient Receives First Wrist Replacement

A man in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides has become the first patient in Stornoway to undergo a total wrist replacement, in what doctors are describing as a landmark moment for surgical care in remote communities.

Donald Morrison received the procedure at Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway, marking the first time such an operation has been performed on the island.

The surgery was carried out by a visiting specialist team, allowing Morrison to avoid travelling to mainland Scotland for treatment.

Health officials said the development represents a significant step forward for patients in remote and rural areas, where access to advanced surgical procedures has long been limited.

It is expected to pave the way for more complex orthopedic surgeries to be carried out locally.

Morrison expressed relief at being able to undergo the surgery close to home, saying it spared him the stress and financial strain of travelling long distances for care.

The Western Isles Health Board described the successful wrist replacement as part of its ongoing efforts to expand specialist services in Stornoway and reduce inequalities in access to healthcare for island residents.
