Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State officially ushered in a new era of governance at the Lagos State University (LASU) on Tuesday, the 9th of December, 2025, by inaugurating its newly appointed Governing Council. During the ceremony, the Governor issued a clear charge to the incoming members, urging them to “demonstrate integrity and provide strong academic leadership.”
The significant event took place at Lagos House, Ikeja, and drew an impressive array of attendees, including top government officials, university executives, and influential figures within the state’s tertiary education landscape.
Following the inauguration, Governor Sanwo-Olu took to his official Facebook page to share key highlights and reflections on the day’s proceedings.
The Governor underscored the critical role of LASU, calling it a “cornerstone institution for nurturing young talent and promoting Lagos’ academic prominence globally.” He publicly voiced his full confidence in the council’s ability to deliver focused, principled, and visionary guidance to the university community.
Echoing his expectations for the new board, Sanwo-Olu stated, “I am confident that this council will guide the university with integrity, dedication, and a steadfast commitment to excellence,” stressing that robust and effective governance is absolutely vital for ensuring the institution’s sustained upward trajectory.
The event saw the attendance of numerous senior state officials, including Lawal Pedro, SAN, the Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice; Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, the Secretary to the State Government; Olabode Agoro, the Head of Service; and Tolani Sule, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education. Also present were LASU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, and other senior university personnel.

Governor Sanwo-Olu extended formal congratulations to Babatunde Ogala, SAN, on his appointment as the Chairman of the Governing Council. Other new members, including Remi Desalu, were formally sworn in and proceeded to take their oaths of office.
The Governor emphasized that the newly constituted council is entrusted with a powerful mandate: to steer LASU through strategic reforms and initiatives. These efforts are specifically designed to bolster academic standards, significantly increase research output, and improve student welfare.
Concluding his address with an ambitious outlook, Governor Sanwo-Olu added, “I look forward to witnessing LASU’s continued growth as a leading university in Nigeria and on the global stage.”
