The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has detained a legislator, Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, for allegedly assaulting a Bolt driver in Abuja.
According to FCT Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh, Ikwechegh “is at the Maitama Police Station undergoing questioning.”
In a statement on Monday, the Command reported that Bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseya lodged a complaint following a dispute while delivering a package to Ikwechegh.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that Mr. Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwechegh when a dispute arose concerning the method of delivery. During this altercation, Mr. Abuwatseya was reportedly physically assaulted,” the statement noted.
The Command expressed alarm over Ikwechegh’s attitude, detailing how he allegedly downplayed the authority of law enforcement.
“After allegedly slapping the victim, he reportedly remarked with contempt, ‘You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,’ demonstrating a troubling disregard for the authority of law enforcement,” the statement added.
Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu has ordered a full investigation into the incident.
“The Command is committed to conducting an impartial investigation and ensuring justice in all cases. Upon completion of the investigation, appropriate legal action will be taken,” the Command stated.
The incident echoes a similar occurrence in the UK, where British MP Mike Amesbury was filmed allegedly assaulting a man. Amesbury was subsequently suspended by the Labour Party pending investigation.
