A political rally held in support of Brazil’s former far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, was thrown into chaos on Sunday after a lightning strike injured dozens of supporters gathered in the capital, Brasília, authorities confirmed.
According to the Brazilian fire department, 89 people were injured when lightning struck near the crowd during heavy rainfall. Forty-seven victims were taken to hospital, while 11 required major medical care, emergency officials said.
Thousands of Bolsonaro supporters had converged on the city despite stormy weather, many sheltering under colourful umbrellas and plastic raincoats. Videos circulating on social media captured the moment of the strike, showing a sudden flash of light followed by loud thunder, leaving the crowd visibly shaken.
The rally was organised by federal lawmaker Nikolas Ferreira, who called for amnesty for Bolsonaro, who remains imprisoned after being sentenced to 27 years last year for leading a failed coup attempt following his narrow electoral defeat.

Bolsonaro is currently being held at the Papuda penitentiary complex in Brasília. The former president has faced recurring health challenges linked to a 2018 stabbing during his presidential campaign. In December, he spent a week in hospital undergoing surgery for a groin hernia and treatment for persistent hiccups.
Earlier this month, prison authorities confirmed Bolsonaro underwent medical tests after a fall in custody, though no serious injuries were found.
Sunday’s incident has renewed concerns about public safety at large political gatherings, particularly during extreme weather conditions, even as Bolsonaro’s supporters continue to campaign for his release.
