Lt. Col. Appolonia Anaele Makes History as First Female Army Spokesperson

In a landmark development, the Nigerian Army has appointed Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anaele as its new spokesperson—making her the first woman in the institution’s history to lead the Directorate of Army Public Relations.

Anaele is set to assume her new role as Acting Director of Army Public Relations on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, taking over from the incumbent, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu. Military insiders confirmed that formal handover arrangements are already in motion.

Her appointment marks a significant breakthrough for gender representation within the Nigerian Army, which has never had a female officer head its communications arm since the service was established over five decades ago.

Anaele’s elevation is being hailed by security watchers and gender advocates alike as a bold step toward inclusivity and a reflection of the growing recognition of women’s leadership potential within Nigeria’s armed forces.

While the Army has yet to issue an official statement, the historic nature of the appointment has already sparked widespread commendation across military and civil circles, signaling a shift in what has traditionally been a male-dominated command structure.

Lieutenant Colonel Anaele is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the Army’s public relations strategy at a time when military-civil engagement is more crucial than ever amid internal security challenges and growing demands for transparency.
