French President Emmanuel Macron has arrived in the United Kingdom for a landmark three-day state visit, aimed at reviving Franco-British relations in the post-Brexit era and reaffirming mutual commitments to defence, diplomacy, and cross-Channel cooperation.

Macron’s visit marks the first by a French head of state since 2008 and the first by any EU leader since Britain’s departure from the European Union in 2020. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office has described the visit as “historic,” highlighting its potential to reset ties between London and European capitals following years of political tension.

The French president and his wife, Brigitte Macron, were welcomed at the airport by Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, before heading to Windsor Castle for a ceremonial reception by King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The royal banquet and displays of pageantry underscore the symbolic weight of the occasion, which Buckingham Palace says celebrates a friendship rooted in “shared values and determination.”

King Charles is expected to tell Macron at the state dinner that both nations “face a multitude of complex threats” and must respond to them “as friends and as allies,” according to a prepared speech released by the Palace.

The visit also carries significant political and diplomatic weight. Macron will address the UK Parliament, joining the ranks of past French presidents Charles de Gaulle and François Mitterrand, and will hold multiple meetings with Prime Minister Starmer throughout the week. Their agenda includes discussions on defence cooperation, increased support for Ukraine, trade and investment opportunities, and curbing irregular migration across the English Channel.

The two leaders will co-host the 37th Franco-British Summit on Thursday, where they are expected to deepen bilateral defence coordination. Britain and France are currently leading a 30-nation coalition exploring options for a ceasefire and peacekeeping mission in Ukraine.

In a scheduled joint call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Macron and Starmer will discuss scaling up support for Kyiv and intensifying diplomatic pressure on Russia.

Migration policy is another priority on the agenda. The UK has long urged French authorities to take firmer action in preventing small boat departures from northern France. Starmer, under growing domestic pressure to stem migrant crossings, has welcomed recent French efforts, including police intervention last Friday that thwarted an attempted launch.

Speculation is also mounting over whether Macron will revive plans to loan the historic Bayeux Tapestry to Britain—a gesture initially proposed in 2018 but left unresolved. The UK government confirmed on Monday that discussions with French officials on the matter are ongoing.

Macron’s visit is widely seen as a carefully choreographed effort to reset relations, offering both nations an opportunity to move beyond past friction and present a united front on shared global challenges.
