Mahdi Shehu, the Kaduna-based activist and vocal socio-political critic, has broken his silence after being released from detention upon meeting a N3 million bail condition.
In a heartfelt statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on the 9th of January, 2025, Shehu expressed his profound gratitude to his supporters and even those who remained indifferent or critical during his 12-day incarceration.
Shehu’s arrest stemmed from the circulation of a controversial video alleging that French military forces had bases in Nigeria, a claim authorities argued could incite unrest and undermine national security.
However, following his legal battle, the Kaduna State High Court granted him bail on the 9th of January, 2025.
Expressing deep appreciation, Shehu thanked those who rallied behind him, offering prayers, concern, and unwavering solidarity. At the same time, he extended a nod of thanks to those who criticized or remained neutral about his situation.
“During my arrest, detention, and incarceration spanning 12 days, I have a duty and obligation to thank the following classes of people,” Shehu shared.
“To those genuinely worried, supportive, and prayerful, your prayers were felt and served their purpose.
“To those who were happy and celebrative, I thank you because you emboldened me and offered seasoning to my worldview.
“To those sitting on the fence—neither concerned nor supportive but silent—I acknowledge your indifference, which one day will place you somewhere, either as victims or villains, willy-nilly.”
Additionally, Shehu apologized for his inability to respond to the overwhelming 4 million messages flooding his social media platforms during his time in detention.
