The Ekiti State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a middle-aged man, identified simply as Segun, who reportedly took his own life by hanging in Ise Ekiti, headquarters of Ise/Orun Local Government Area of the state.
Sources said the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, adding that the man allegedly attempted to slit the throat of his elder daughter before hanging himself on a tree behind their residence.
A resident of the community, Mr Patrick Abayomi, said the incident threw the neighbourhood into shock as residents were drawn to the scene by distressing noises from the house.
According to him, neighbours arrived to find the man’s lifeless body hanging from a tree, while the injured girl, said to be about 12 years old, was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
Abayomi said the girl was responding to treatment, while efforts were being made by residents to arrange for the removal of the body from the tree.
Another source in the community, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the incident had raised serious concerns among residents, adding that the priority was the recovery of the injured child from both physical injuries and trauma.
