Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has thrown his weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, describing it as a crucial step to restore stability in the politically volatile region.
In a statement on Tuesday, Matawalle defended the move, insisting that the escalating political crisis in Rivers had disrupted governance and necessitated immediate federal intervention.
He urged all political stakeholders to respect the President’s directive and work towards a peaceful resolution.
“The declaration of a state of emergency is a necessary measure to address the ongoing crisis, which has hindered the delivery of democratic governance and the welfare of the people of Rivers State,” the minister said.
He also assured Nigerians that the military is on high alert to maintain law and order, protect government infrastructure, and ensure the security of citizens. “Any attempts to attack government facilities or disrupt public order will be met with a resolute response from security forces,” he warned.
Matawalle pointed to the controversial demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex by the state government as a key factor in the crisis.
He noted that the destruction of the legislature had left the state without a functional lawmaking body for over 14 months, worsening political instability.
“The absence of a functioning legislative arm has deepened the impasse and hindered the government’s ability to serve the people,” he said.

He also referenced a recent Supreme Court ruling, which emphasized the constitutional need for a working legislature and condemned the governor’s actions as unlawful.
According to Matawalle, the ruling underscores the urgency of restoring democratic governance in the state.
The minister further expressed concern over reports of vandalism and threats from militant groups, warning that such activities pose a significant danger to peace and stability.
He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding the state and ensuring the protection of vital infrastructure.
Matawalle also reaffirmed the Ministry of Defence’s dedication to upholding national security, stating that the Nigerian Armed Forces remain committed to restoring order in Rivers.
“This is an opportunity for renewed governance and cooperation. The state of emergency will help pave the way for a peaceful and democratic Rivers State, benefiting all its residents,” he added.
As the situation in Rivers State continues to unfold, political observers are closely watching how the emergency measures will impact governance and stability in the oil-rich region.
