McConnell, 83, Falls in Capitol Hallway During Senate Votes

United States Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell briefly fell in a Capitol hallway on Thursday, October 16, 2025, while walking to the Senate chamber for scheduled votes.

Witnesses said the 83-year-old Kentucky Republican lost his balance near the Ohio Clock Corridor, close to the Senate floor, before aides and Capitol Police officers helped him back to his feet.

McConnell appeared alert and was able to continue walking without medical assistance.

His spokesperson confirmed the incident in a statement to reporters, describing it as “a minor stumble.”

The statement added that McConnell “was not injured and continued with his duties immediately afterward.”

Journalists at the Capitol said the senator resumed participation in the day’s votes shortly after the incident and was seen speaking with colleagues in the chamber.

McConnell, who has served in the Senate since 1985 and is the longest-serving party leader in its history, has experienced health-related episodes in recent years.

In March 2023, he was hospitalized for several days after suffering a concussion from a fall at a Washington hotel.

Later that year, he was treated by the Capitol physician following two brief public freeze episodes during press appearances.

The latest fall has reignited discussions in Washington about the health and longevity of senior lawmakers, several of whom remain active in congressional leadership well into their 80s.

McConnell’s office has maintained that he is in good health and “fully capable of fulfilling his official responsibilities.”
