Meloni Set to Meet Trump as US-Europe Trade Rift Widens

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is heading to the White House on 17th of April, 2025, for a meeting with US President Donald Trump. Her mission: to lower tensions over American tariffs on European products and present herself as a key go-between for Washington and Brussels.

Her visit reflects a tricky balancing act. On one hand, she shares some ideological leanings with Trump. On the other, she remains closely tied to EU partners who have criticized his tariff spikes and exclusion of the bloc from peace efforts with Russia.

Meloni faces domestic pressure to defend Italy’s economy. The country posted a €40 billion ($45.4 billion) trade surplus with the US last year. But as the leader of an EU member state, she also needs to champion the broader interests of the 27-nation union.

French ministers have already voiced concerns that her solo visit might weaken EU unity. Still, the European Commission, which oversees trade negotiations, is backing her trip.

Reports say Trump’s sudden 90-day pause on global tariffs has eased the weight on Meloni. She’s no longer expected to come back with a firm agreement, just to set the stage for one.

Meloni was the only EU leader at Trump’s January inauguration. Now, her meeting with him comes just a day before she welcomes Vice President JD Vance to Rome a one-two diplomatic punch that signals Italy’s growing interest in shaping transatlantic ties.

Trump hasn’t yet met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. That’s left her depending on other channels to represent EU positions.

Ahead of the White House visit, Meloni and von der Leyen have reportedly kept close contact.

Both have pushed for an end to Trump’s reciprocal tariffs on EU goods, and Meloni plans to make the case for a “zero-for-zero” industrial tariff deal.
