Midnight Explosion Rocks Maiduguri Military Barracks

Deadly explosions believed to be bomb blasts have rocked Maiduguri in Borno State, Nigeria, instilling fear and causing residents to run for safety.

FirstNews correspondent learnt that the explosion occurred at one of the Nigerian Army’s ammunition storage facilities located in Giwa Barracks.

The Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations Headquarters Theatre Command Operation HADIN KAI, Reuben Kovangiya, disclosed this in a statement in the late hours of Wednesday.

Kovangiya in the statement revealed that the cause of the explosion was due to the current high temperatures in Maiduguri.

According to him, the situation has been brought under control with the combined efforts of the Borno State Fire Service Department and other fire trucks from security agencies.

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have been deployed to protect the public and prevent miscreants from taking advantage of the situation.

Some residents who commented on the incident claimed that the blast occurred around midnight on Wednesday.

While others indicated that the explosion may have resulted from a fire at the Giwa Barracks armory.

The Nigerian Army has urged residents to disregard any rumours regarding a potential attack in the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council and to maintain a sense of calm.
