Minister of Defence Calls for Sustained Peace in Plateau, Lauds Military Efforts

The Honourable Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, held a critical meeting with stakeholders, opinion leaders, traditional rulers, security agencies, and chairmen of affected Local Government Areas in Plateau State on Monday.

The discussions focused on sustaining peace, particularly in the crisis-prone regions of Barkin Ladi, Riyom, Bokkos, Wase, and Bassa Local Government Areas.

In a press release issued by Henshaw Ogubike, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Defence, the Minister expressed satisfaction with the current state of peace in the region and called for its continued sustenance. He stressed the importance of peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders, urging both groups to avoid violence and resolve conflicts peacefully.

“The Federal Government is committed to deploying all assets to ensure our people sleep with their eyes closed,” the Minister assured during the meeting, emphasizing the government’s dedication to ensuring security for all citizens.

Badaru identified several root causes of the region’s recurring crises, including negligence by some leaders, criminal exploitation, and deep-rooted ethno-religious tensions. He urged for greater community engagement, credible intelligence gathering, and collective action to address these issues.

The Minister also welcomed suggestions from stakeholders, reaffirming the government’s commitment to lasting peace.

Earlier, the Minister addressed senior officers and troops actively engaged in combating insecurity in Plateau State, praising their efforts to restore stability.

He conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s appreciation, stating, “The President has sent me to thank you and urge you to do more.”

Badaru highlighted the progress made in the state, such as the recovery of weapons and ammunition and the dismantling of local arms-producing factories.

He called on security personnel to intensify their efforts, saying, “Are you ready to end insecurity in Plateau? Your dedication is crucial. I will inform the President of your commitment.”

Representing the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, Special Adviser on Security and Homeland Safety, Brig. Gen. Gakji Shipi, echoed the Minister’s sentiments. He praised the outcomes of the stakeholders’ engagement, expressing optimism about the future of security in the state. He also pledged the continued support of the Plateau State Government for the military’s efforts to combat insecurity.

The meeting underscores the Federal Government’s resolve to address security challenges in Plateau State through collaboration, dialogue, and a commitment to peace.
