Mobile, Internet Blackout Imminent as Diesel Shortage Worsens, ATCON Warns

The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) has raised concerns over a diesel supply crisis caused by an ongoing strike by the Petroleum Tanker Drivers, a branch of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers.

ATCON President, Tony Emoekpere, in a statement on Sunday, February 23, warned that the disruption is critically affecting telecom base stations, putting millions of mobile and internet users at risk of losing access to essential services.

“This strike, which stems from the persistent harassment of tanker and petroleum products roduct drivers by police officers in Lagos State, has effectively halted all truck loading operations and fuel movements,” he said.

He noted that many telecom sites are running low on diesel, and if urgent action is not taken, the situation could lead to a total network blackout.

This, he warned, would disrupt mobile and internet access, business activities, emergency response systems, and daily communications.

ATCON urged the governors of Lagos and Ogun states to intervene by facilitating the release of diesel from depots to telecom operators to prevent further deterioration.

“This is not just a telecom issue—it is a national emergency that could cripple economic activities and compromise public safety,” Emoekpere stressed.

The association also called on security agencies and petroleum unions to find an immediate resolution to prevent long-term damage to Nigeria’s communication networks and economic stability.
