‘My One-Term Vow Is Sacrosanct’, Peter Obi Fires Back at Soludo, Others

Peter Obi has firmly reiterated his commitment to serving only one term of four years if elected, describing the vow as “sacrosanct” despite rising scepticism from political figures and commentators.

In a post via his official X handle on Sunday, August 3, the Labour Party leader made reference to renowned global leaders like Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, and Nelson Mandela, who served short but impactful tenures.

He wrote, “It is within this context that I reiterate my vow: I will serve only one term of four years if elected President. And that vow is sacrosanct.”

Obi’s reaffirmation comes amid criticism from key voices.

Human rights activist and political commentator Deji Adeyanju, during a recent interview on Arise Television, remarked: “Even if he [Peter Obi] swears in a shrine, they will not believe him and they will not vote for him,” referring to Obi’s one-term pledge.

Similarly, Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, at a second-term endorsement rally in Anambra South on Saturday, August 2, said: “Any politician who says that [they will serve only one term] must be sent to a psychiatric home because the person must have some mental problem.”

In response, Obi said, “I understand the basis of their scepticism… They are judging me by their own standards – where political promises are made to be broken. But they forget, or perhaps choose to ignore, that Peter Obi is not cut from that cloth.”

He added that his record of integrity in Anambra remains verifiable. “Forty-eight months is enough for any leader who is focused and prepared to make a meaningful difference,” he said, pledging reforms in governance, education, healthcare, security, and the economy.
