N29.5bn owed ground rent: FCTA to prosecute 413 Abuja landlords

Federal Capital Territory Administration says it has concluded arrangements to prosecute about 413 defaulting property owners.

FCTA said on Sunday that the landlords will be arraigned in court over the N29.5billion Ground Rents they’re currently owing.

Director of Information, Muhammad Sule, disclosed that the landlords’ prosecution, which may begin at the end of August, may result in the forfeiture of the affected properties.

Sule in a statement expressed regret that the debtor landlords failed to pay their outstanding debt inspite of several appeals and warnings.

He said that since all entreaties had failed, the FCTA had “no other option than to commence the prosecution of the first batch of defaulting property owners”.

Towards this end, the FCTA recovery committee has engaged five law firms owned by Senior Advocates of Nigeria to prosecute the titleholders.

“Letters serving as last warning to the debtors have been dispatched, and the real court cases will start at the end of August 2022″, Sule said.

The FCTA warned that there won’t be sacred cows, adding that the only respite for the debtors is the settlement of their individual debts.
