N2bn recovered loots: Malami washes hands off

Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami has denied allegations that N2billion out of the recovered looted funds was paid to his office.

The House of Representatives ad hoc committee probing the status of the recovered loot earlier during the week, alleged that a letter from the Central Bank of Nigeria indicated that N2billion of the recovered funds was paid to Malami.

The committee also said that they did not approve the funds as budgetary allocations.

Malami, however, denied the allegations in a statement issued by the Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, and Minister of Justice, Umar Jibrilu Gwandu.

The statement explained that prior to the repatriation of all the recovered assets, Nigeria and the other countries involved signed a memorandum of understanding as to what the funds will be used for and it also claimed the government has been working in compliance with all the provisions of multinational agreements reached.

The statement also clarified that the Federal Government has a designated account at the Central Bank of Nigeria for all recovered assets, adding that the Minister in any capacity either as Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, has not received any funds from the recovered assets.

The minister, however, challenged any person who has any evidence of such payments to either him or his office, to come out publicly with proofs.

Malami further noted that it was on the basis of the application of the said funds in line with the agreements that Nigeria earns a reputation among the international committee of nations which translated into further recoveries of hidden funds.
