NAFDAC Sounds Alarm: Flood of Unregistered Edible Oils Hits Nigerian Markets

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert over the growing circulation of substandard and unregistered edible oils across Nigeria.

In a statement posted on its X handle on Tuesday, the agency identified affected brands to include FINO, PUR, OKI, SUPER DELICIEX, and LA JONIC, noting that their sources, production processes, and safety standards remain unknown. The oils, NAFDAC said, are being smuggled into the country and sold under multiple brand names in major markets across Onitsha, Aba, Owerri, Warri, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Ikom, Calabar, Lagos (Trade Fair, Okiarin, Ikotun, Mushin), Kano, Kebbi, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Yola, Gombe, Bauchi, Idiroko, Makurdi, and Lafia.

The alert followed concerns raised by Lebruni Agro Limited, a registered Nigerian company that produces hygienically processed edible soybean oil (Liorga oil) and palm kernel oil. The company’s internal market surveillance revealed that the listed brands maintain warehousing facilities to support an illegal distribution network.

“These products carry no identifiable manufacturer details or NAFDAC registration numbers and are absent from our regulatory database,” NAFDAC said. “The public is urged to report any suspected substandard or unregistered edible oil to the nearest NAFDAC office.”

The agency emphasized that consumption of unregistered edible oils poses serious health risks due to unknown production standards and potential adulteration. It called on consumers to exercise caution and verify that edible oils bear valid NAFDAC registration numbers before purchase.

NAFDAC’s warning comes amid increasing scrutiny of food safety standards in Nigeria, highlighting the need for stronger regulatory enforcement to protect consumers from potentially harmful products.
