Nation Under Siege: Obi Condemns Maiduguri Blasts, Demands Action

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed deep concern over the recent deadly explosions in Maiduguri, describing the incident as a grim reflection of Nigeria’s worsening security crisis.

In a statement posted on his official X account on Tuesday, Obi said the country is “once again engulfed in grief and outrage,” lamenting what he described as a failure of governance in fulfilling its primary responsibility of protecting lives and property.

The former Anambra State governor noted that the scale and coordination of the attacks, which reportedly left several people dead and over a hundred injured, particularly in vulnerable locations such as markets and near hospitals, underscored the urgency of addressing insecurity across the country.

Obi warned against what he termed the growing normalisation of violence, stating that the muted national response to recurring attacks reflects a troubling acceptance of insecurity rather than a decisive effort to confront it.

He further highlighted a pattern of violent incidents across several states, including Kwara, Nasarawa, Kogi, Plateau, Sokoto, Benue, and even the Federal Capital Territory, stressing that the situation demands immediate and coordinated national attention.

He also referenced reports from Katsina State, where some communities are allegedly being forced to pay levies to armed groups in exchange for safety.

Calling for urgent leadership, Obi urged authorities to prioritise security interventions, including visiting affected communities and strengthening measures to protect citizens.

He stressed that moments of crisis test not only the country’s security framework but also the resolve and compassion of its leadership.

He extended condolences to victims and their families, praying for the repose of the deceased and the recovery of those injured, while urging Nigerians to remain hopeful despite the challenges.

Obi concluded by reiterating his belief in a better future for the country, emphasising that Nigeria must act decisively to safeguard its people and restore public confidence in governance.
