Nationwide Protests Day 2: Police Teargas Protesters at Berger Bridge in Abuja

On Friday morning, a detachment of fully armed Nigerian Police officers forcefully dispersed a group of protesters gathered at the Berger Bridge in Abuja.

The protesters, participating in nationwide demonstrations, were met with a strong response from law enforcement, leading to accusations of high-handedness from passers-by and motorists caught in the midst of the commotion.

The incident follows a recent injunction by an Abuja high court, which sought to confine protesters to the MKO Abiola National Stadium. Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, urged protesters on Thursday night to comply with the court order.

However, leaders of the protest movement have claimed they were not served with a copy of the injunction, leading to confusion and defiance among demonstrators.

The protests, which have entered their second day, continue to highlight the tension between authorities and citizens exercising their right to assemble.

As the situation develops, both sides remain steadfast in their positions, with the government emphasizing order and security, while protesters advocate for their rights and grievances to be heard.
