NDC Names Dickson Campaign Chairman, Obi Co-Chair For 2027 Polls

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has appointed its National Leader, Seriake Dickson, as chairman of its National Campaign Council for the 2027 general elections, with presidential candidate Peter Obi named co-chairman.

The appointments, announced on Sunday, October 25, precede the council’s inauguration in Abuja on Monday, October 26.

National Chairman Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe will serve as vice-chairman, while vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso takes the position of co-vice-chairman. National Secretary Ikenna Enekweizu was named council secretary, and Ibrahim Abdulkarim appointed Director-General.

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, will chair the National Advisory Council. Other appointees include former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege, former presidential candidate Pat Utomi and former Congress for Progressive Change National Secretary Buba Galadima.

The inauguration forms part of the party’s activities on Monday, alongside its third National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and the commissioning of its new national secretariat in Jabi, Abuja.

According to National Publicity Secretary Osa Director, the NEC meeting will begin at 10am at the JD Event Centre in Maitama, while the secretariat commissioning is scheduled for 2pm.

The campaign council’s inauguration and presentation of Certificates of Return to the party’s presidential, governorship, National Assembly and state assembly candidates will follow at 5pm, ahead of a dinner.

Attendance at the NEC meeting will be restricted to committee members and party candidates. The campaign council’s inauguration will be limited to National Working Committee members, the presidential candidate and his running mate, governorship candidates and National Assembly candidates.

The party said the council would coordinate a people-centred, issue-based campaign for the 2027 elections.

The move follows an earlier dispute over a separate campaign council announced by the OK Movement, a support group backing Obi and Kwankwaso, highlighting disagreements over the coordination of campaign activities.

The NDC also plans to present its financial statement at the NEC meeting. Director previously attributed the party’s financial challenges partly to economic hardship, claiming that about 80 per cent of its candidates could not afford Expression of Interest forms. He said the party waived the fees for affected aspirants.

The inauguration is expected to formalise the NDC’s campaign leadership as preparations for the 2027 elections gather pace.
