NDC Rift: Dickson, Obi Hold Closed-Door Meeting, Urge Members To “Stop Bickering”

The National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Seriake Dickson, says he has resolved recent concerns within the party following a closed-door meeting with the party’s 2027 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Dickson disclosed this in a statement released on Friday, June 12, after receiving Obi and other senior party leaders for discussions that lasted about three hours.

According to the former Bayelsa State governor, the meeting focused on reviewing party activities and addressing issues that had generated concern among stakeholders in recent weeks.

“I just received my brother, colleague, and partner in the New Nigerian Project, His Excellency Mr. Peter Gregory Obi, CON, our presidential candidate, who, together with some distinguished leaders of our party, held a closed-door meeting which lasted about three hours,” Dickson said.

He stated that discussions were frank and productive, resulting in an agreement on how outstanding matters would be handled going forward.

“In the course of that meeting, we reviewed the activities of our party and discussed a few recent issues that have been a source of concern to all sides, and we amicably resolved all the issues,” he said.

The NDC leader stressed that both camps remained united in their broader political objective of winning future elections and challenging the ruling administration.

“We have always been on the same page on the bigger picture, i.e., winning the elections for all candidates of our party and rescuing Nigeria from the misgovernance of the APC-led government.

“However, a few issues have arisen, and we have agreed on how to handle them moving forward,” Dickson added.

He also appealed to party members to avoid internal disputes and focus on building a stronger opposition platform ahead of future elections.

“I want to use this opportunity again to call on all members of our party to stop the bickering and name-calling and focus on the bigger picture. Both His Excellency Peter Obi and I, as well as other leaders and stakeholders of our party, will continue to consult and engage with one another to address and resolve concerns, strengthen the unity and cohesion of our party, and ensure that we remain focused on our shared mission of rescuing Nigeria and building a better future for all,” he said.

The meeting comes amid recent public disagreements and exchanges among some NDC leaders and supporters, which had fuelled speculation about divisions within the party.

Dickson’s statement suggests efforts are underway to restore unity and maintain focus on the party’s political agenda ahead of the 2027 general election.
