Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have uncovered consignments of cocaine and heroin concealed inside fireproof iron safe boxes during a raid on a suspected drug trafficking hotspot in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The discovery was made in the Abuja area of Port Harcourt, where suspected drug dealers were allegedly using iron safes, normally designed to protect valuables from fire and theft, to store high-value illicit substances.
The NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, disclosed the development in a post shared on X on Sunday.
Babafemi said the suspects had resorted to the use of the heavy-duty safes as a means of protecting the drugs from theft and damage.
“Iron safe boxes are meant to preserve money, documents and jewellery against fire and theft, but NDLEA officers have discovered during a raid at the notorious Abuja area of Port Harcourt that drug dealers now stash high-value illicit drugs such as cocaine and heroin in same fireproof iron boxes,” he stated.

The agency also released footage showing the discovery and opening of one of the safes during the operation.
The latest seizure highlights the increasingly sophisticated methods allegedly being employed by drug traffickers to conceal and secure illicit substances from law enforcement agencies.
The NDLEA has continued to intensify its operations against drug trafficking and abuse across the country, with raids and seizures targeting suspected trafficking networks and drug distribution centres.
