Twelve people lost their lives and 14 others were injured in electricity-related incidents across Nigeria in the first quarter of 2025, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
In its Q1 2025 report, NERC linked the deaths to 31 health and safety accidents within the electricity sector, mostly involving distribution companies.
“The total number of accidents in 2025/Q1 was 31, which resulted in 14 injuries and 12 fatalities,” the Commission stated.
It noted that investigations had begun into all reported cases. “The Commission has initiated investigations into all reported accidents and will enforce appropriate actions where necessary.
“Furthermore, the Commission continues to closely monitor the implementation of licensees’ accident reduction strategies for the NESI,“ the report read.
Enugu Electricity Distribution Company was associated with four deaths, the highest among the DisCos. Jos accounted for three, Benin and Kano two each, and Port Harcourt one.

Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) was specifically cited in the electrocution of one Mr. Moshood Salami in Kwara State.
NERC said IBEDC was sanctioned for “non-compliance with the NESI’s regulations, distribution code, and health and safety requirements in Binukonu Community, Kwara State, leading to the fatal electrocution of Master Moshood Salami.”
The causes of the fatalities ranged from illegal access and unsafe practices to vandalism and falls from height.
No incidents were recorded by generation companies, while Aba Power, Kano, and Yola DisCos had no casualties.
Benin, Eko, and Ibadan DisCos accounted for the most casualties with six, five, and five cases respectively.
“As observed in previous quarters, DisCos continue to account for the majority of the safety challenges experienced in NESI. Cumulatively, they accounted for 100 per cent of casualties recorded in 2025/Q1,” the report added.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to improving sector safety through stronger oversight.
