New Dawn in the Skies: Enugu Launches People-Centric Airline to Spur Economic Growth

In a bold move to redefine public infrastructure and economic development in Nigeria’s Southeast, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State unveiled the state’s new airline, Enugu Air, on Monday. But in his own words, this is no “vanity project.”

Speaking at the launch event held at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Governor Mbah positioned the airline as a public-serving enterprise — one that puts the needs of traders, students, business professionals, and the everyday traveller at its core.

“This airline doesn’t belong to the government. It belongs to the people,” Mbah declared to an enthusiastic crowd. “To the traders, the students, the investors, and the travelers — Enugu Air is your airline.”

Rather than a ceremonial showpiece, the governor described Enugu Air as a catalyst for a broader economic mission: to transform Enugu into a thriving regional powerhouse.

With a vision anchored in public-private partnership, the airline is designed to be a gateway to investment, connectivity, and career opportunities.

“This marks the beginning of a new era,” Mbah said. “An era where infrastructure is not just built for applause, but to serve. Where leadership doesn’t just cut ribbons but creates platforms for generations to thrive.”

He went on to highlight the airline’s wider ambitions: boosting regional logistics, stimulating tourism, and opening new paths for the local youth into sectors like aviation and hospitality.

“For our diaspora, it’s about simplifying their return home,” Mbah said. “For our investors, it’s a signal that Enugu is open, ready, and serious about growth.”

With Enugu Air’s launch, the state hopes to not only improve regional connectivity but also send a message across Nigeria and beyond: the Southeast is ready for business, and it’s flying on its own wings.
