NFVCB Honours Toyin Abraham After ₦1bn Box Office Milestone

Actress and filmmaker Toyin Abraham was celebrated on Thursday, March 19, 2026, with the Box Office Champion Award by the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) following the blockbuster success of her directorial debut, Oversabi Aunty.

Released on Friday, December 19, 2025, Oversabi Aunty crossed the ₦1 billion mark at the Nigerian box office, making Abraham the first debut director in Nollywood history to achieve this feat.

The film now ranks among the highest-grossing Nigerian productions ever.

At the ceremony held at the NFVCB zonal office in Ikoyi, Lagos, Executive Director Shuaib Husseini described Abraham’s achievement as a landmark for the industry.

“This award recognises not just a personal triumph but the commercial and cultural strength of Nigerian cinema,” he said, emphasising the board’s commitment to supporting filmmakers who drive growth in the sector.

Sanusi Yakubu, President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, represented by Don Pedro, praised Abraham’s impact on Nollywood, noting that Oversabi Aunty highlights the global appeal of authentic Nigerian storytelling.

Abraham, in her acceptance remarks, thanked her husband, production team, and cinema-going audiences.

She revealed that directing the film herself was a personal ambition, a decision now validated by its record-breaking performance.

The comedy-drama follows the chaotic misadventures of an overzealous church usher meddling in community and family affairs.

Its ensemble cast includes Mike Ezuruonye, Efe Irele, Queen Nwokoye, Jemima Osunde, Enioluwa Adeoluwa, and Tana Adelana.

The film’s red-carpet premiere was held on Sunday, December 14, 2025, ahead of its nationwide release.

Industry stakeholders and public figures, including Olori Temitope Ogunwusi, wife of the Ooni of Ife, attended the NFVCB event, underscoring the cultural significance of Abraham’s achievement.

Oversabi Aunty’s success underscores Nollywood’s growing commercial strength and proves that locally produced films can compete effectively with international releases at the Nigerian box office.
