Nigeian Idols: Viewers ‘tutor’ Seyi Shay on how to talk

Nigerian Idol Season 6 audition main show started last Sunday, 28th of March, 2020.

The popular reality TV singing competition, where people from all spheres of life come out and show their talent, has Deborah Oluwaseyi Joshua fondly called Seyi Shay, as one of its judges this year.

During the last Sunday show, Seyi Shay was seen criticising one of the contestants badly.

Reactions have continued to trail how she spoke to the contestant, a 17-year-old boy.

She had told the boy, “Somebody lied to you and told you to come and audition, and that person, you should go back and tell them they’re not your friends because that was not a good audition.

“Oh, you have a good talking voice, and it comes out in your singing voice, but your performance, terrible. You’re never going to make money being a singer.”

Seyi Shay’s critics argue that she should have employed other subtitle ways to talk to the boy instead of embarrassing him.

Our reporter asked Nigerians about what they feel concerning what Seyi Shay did and hear are some of their responses.

Ayo – The judgement was actually wrong, I guess the young boy needed encouragement and motivation than all she said to him.

However, if I am the boy I will take up the challenge and work on being better in the music world and proof Seyi Shay wrong…..

Criticism is good most of the time, it opens our eyes to see what ordinarily we wouldn’t have seen if not criticized.

Femi – I will regard Seyi Shay’s comment towards the boy’s performance as a discouraging one. Nigerian Idol is supposed to be a platform to encourage young Nigerian musicians.

She undermined the vision and mission of Nigerian Idol from her comments to the young boy; that comment is harsh and discouraging. I really felt bad for him though.

Esther –Well, what she said was not good. Despite the fact that the boy didn’t perform excellently, she could have just told him to work on being a better stage performer instead of saying words that could shatter the boy’s dream and self esteem.

Francis – Seyi Shay shouldn’t have made such a statement to a rookie who came for an audition but anyway, nobody can stop anyone from achieving his or her goal.

To the young champ not getting it right today does not mean it is over. A man once told me this, for you to reason and believe that you can achieve something, nobody can stop you, because you will definitely achieve it if you don’t give up.

Leyla – Seyi Shay’s comment to the boy is too mean and harsh, I feel there are better things to say to discard people. She needed to have been more reasonable and diplomatic while judging the contestants. And for the boy, he should go learn the craft well and become a better person.

Pham Femi – What she did was very wrong. Seyi Shay is not supposed to talk like that and shatter the poor boy’s dream. Even if he sings badly, she should have talked to him in a polite manner and advised him on things that can make him better.

Arinola – There are better ways of doing things, all Seyi Shay needed to do was to speak to the boy calmly and not make him feel worthless on a National TV.
