Niger Governor Welcomes 100 Pupils Freed from Abduction in Papiri

The Niger State Government has received 100 schoolchildren who were abducted last month from St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area.

Governor Mohammed Bago received the rescued pupils at the Government House in Minna, the state capital.

The abduction, which occurred on November 21, involved gunmen attacking the remote school at around 2 a.m., operating for nearly three hours.

A total of 315 people were taken, including 303 students and 12 teachers. About 50 pupils managed to escape within 24 hours and were reunited with their families, leaving 265 still in captivity at the time.

Last week, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu visited the school, assuring parents and school authorities that the abducted children were safe and would soon be released.

Further details on the circumstances surrounding the release and the remaining victims are expected to be released later.
