President Bola Tinubu has invited China to partner with Nigeria on geophysical data sharing, marine research and technical cooperation to unlock the country’s maritime resources and drive the growth of its blue economy.
The proposal prioritizes technology transfer, innovation and data-driven collaboration over traditional development assistance, with Nigeria seeking expertise to strengthen the exploration and sustainable management of its marine assets.
The initiative was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, by the Office of Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations after Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim delivered President Tinubu’s keynote address at the United Nations Sustainable Development Workshop on High-quality Development of the Marine Economy in Beijing.

Representing the President, Ibrahim said access to geophysical and oceanographic data would improve resource mapping, support evidence-based policymaking and attract investment into Nigeria’s maritime sector.
He also urged stronger global cooperation in marine development through technology, artificial intelligence and innovative financing, while noting that the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy in August 2023 underscores the administration’s commitment to making the sector a pillar of economic diversification.
The initiative builds on the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and China, which dates back to February 10, 1971, and was elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership on September 3, 2024, during President Tinubu’s state visit to Beijing, expanding cooperation in trade, infrastructure, technology and the blue economy.
Ibrahim reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to working with China and other partners to harness the economic potential of the oceans through innovation, technical expertise and sustainable development.
