Nigerian forward Chinonso Jeremiah Obi, 20, was hospitalised on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, following a knife attack that Lithuanian authorities and football officials have described as racially motivated.
The attack occurred in Alytus as Obi’s club, FK Dainava, was preparing to travel to Tauragė for a Lithuanian second-tier league match against Tauras.
Police apprehended a suspect at the scene and have launched an investigation into the assault. The match has since been postponed.
The Lithuanian Football Federation (LFF) condemned the attack, calling it a shocking act that tarnishes the nation’s image and threatens the safety of players.
LFF President Edgaras Stankevičius emphasised that all footballers, regardless of race or nationality, should feel safe while performing their duties.

“Racism has no place in football or society,” he said.
Obi joined FK Dainava in February 2025 and had featured in the team’s season opener, a 3‑3 draw against TransINVEST, only days before the incident.
Federation officials described the assault as a disturbing and dangerous message to the international football community, highlighting the ongoing risks faced by players abroad.
The incident comes amid heightened concerns about racism in European football.
In February 2026, Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare faced racial abuse online after missing a penalty for Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English Premier League.
Obi remains under medical care while police continue their investigation, and football authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to protecting players and combating discrimination in the sport.
