Nigerian Navy Celebrates Five Years Without Piracy as New Sailors Graduate

Nigeria’s waterways have remained free of piracy for the past five years, a feat the Nigerian Navy credits to sustained vigilance and strategic operations across the nation’s maritime domain.

Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, Chief of Naval Staff, revealed this milestone on Saturday during the passing-out parade of the 2025 set of young sailors at the Nigerian Navy School in Ikot Ntuen.

Represented by Rear Admiral Gabriel Aligwe, the Chief of Administration at the Navy School, Ogalla emphasized that consistent patrols, surveillance systems, and operations such as Operation Delta Sanity have ensured safety at sea.

“Don’t forget that for about five years now, Nigeria has recorded zero cases of piracy,” Ogalla said. “That tells you the amount of effort put in by our men who constantly patrol the waterways.”

He noted that the Navy’s operational strategy has not only secured the maritime environment but also contributed significantly to regional security and economic stability.

Turning to the graduating sailors, Ogalla encouraged them to remain steadfast in their aspirations, stressing that the rigorous training they had undergone was designed to prepare them for long and rewarding military careers.

Some, he said, would proceed to the Nigerian Defence Academy, while others would continue as Navy personnel.

“My advice is for them to continue to pursue their dreams and remain resilient,” he told the cadets.

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, also joined in celebrating the milestone, commending the discipline and dedication of the new sailors.

Represented by the Commissioner for Education, Ubong Umoh, the governor urged the young graduates to uphold integrity and steer clear of vices that could derail their future.

“With the quality of training here, I have no doubt you have been well prepared for success in the larger society,” Umoh said. “Remain focused, remain determined, and avoid negative influences.”

The event not only marked the graduation of the next generation of naval officers but also reinforced the Nigerian Navy’s role in maintaining a secure maritime corridor—vital for trade, safety, and national pride.
