Nigerian Nurses Petition IGP Over Lagos Assault

The Nigerian Nurses Forum has formally petitioned the Inspector‑General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, calling for an urgent investigation into the alleged assault of a nurse during a vaccination outreach in Lagos.

The petition, released on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, came after an incident on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, when Nurse Hussein, part of a licensed health team, was reportedly attacked while conducting a government‑approved immunization exercise at a local school.

According to the forum, the team had arrived to carry out routine childhood vaccinations when the nurse was allegedly confronted by the school’s headmistress, who reportedly slapped her and twisted her face without provocation.

The incident reportedly arose from a misunderstanding over the school’s stance on the vaccination programme.

The Nigerian Nurses Forum described the assault as unacceptable, warning that attacks on frontline health workers endanger critical public health efforts.

The group emphasized that such incidents could discourage healthcare professionals and undermine vaccination campaigns, particularly those aimed at protecting children from preventable diseases.

In the petition, the forum urged the police to launch a thorough investigation, hold anyone responsible accountable, and enhance security for health workers during outreach activities.

It said swift action would reassure the public and send a clear message that violence against medical personnel will not be tolerated.

The incident has reignited concerns about the safety of healthcare workers engaged in community-based medical services across the country.
