Nigerians Don’t Read Enough — CBN Gov Cardoso Sparks Debate

At the launch of the May edition of the Nigeria Development Update (NDU) in Abuja, on the 12th of May, 2025, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, made a striking observation: “Nigerians perhaps don’t read enough.”

Cardoso, speaking directly and with concern, urged citizens and policymakers to pay closer attention to key economic documents like the NDU.

“I think it’s a very useful document, and I really do want to commend the World Bank for taking the time and the effort to put this out every six months; very useful,” he said.

While praising the World Bank’s consistent effort in compiling the NDU, he called on Nigerians to do more than skim through headlines.

“They don’t take advantage of, and policymakers by extension, such useful analysis, which is readily available,” he noted.

Cardoso reminded the audience of the CBN’s critical role in protecting Nigeria’s economic framework: “Price stability, financial stability those are very key areas that we ensure that we are monitoring and ensure that we get ahead of.”

The latest NDU report by the World Bank projects a 3.4 percent growth rate for Nigeria’s economy in 2024 a sign of resilience, but also a call for deeper engagement with the facts behind the figures.
