A tragic nightclub fire in Kocani, North Macedonia, has claimed at least 59 lives and left 155 others injured, many with severe burns. The fire broke out at the Pulse nightclub around 2:30 AM on Sunday, March 16, 2025, during a concert by popular hip-hop duo DNK. The venue, packed with around 500 people, turned into a death trap within minutes.
Authorities believe the blaze was sparked by pyrotechnic devices used during the performance. Sparks ignited the club’s highly flammable ceiling, causing flames to spread rapidly. Video footage shows panicked concertgoers struggling to escape, hindered by inadequate safety measures. Reports indicate that the venue, a former carpet warehouse, lacked a proper operating license and had only one exit, leading to overcrowding and chaos.
Following the disaster, 15 people have been detained for questioning amid allegations of corruption and illegal operations. Interior Minister Pance Toskovski confirmed that fire safety systems were inadequate and that the club’s back door was locked, preventing many from escaping.

Most of the victims were young, including three minors, while many survivors suffered critical burns to the head, neck, and torso. Some of the injured have been transported to neighboring countries such as Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia, and Turkey for advanced medical care.
Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski described the tragedy as a “dark day” for North Macedonia, declaring a seven-day national mourning period. European leaders, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, have expressed condolences, calling it a heartbreaking loss.
As investigations continue, the disaster raises urgent concerns about fire safety enforcement in public spaces, leaving many questioning how such a preventable catastrophe could occur.
