NiMet Warns of Rain, Thunderstorms, Flash Floods Nationwide

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across several states from Monday to Wednesday, warning of potential flash floods in vulnerable areas.

In its three-day weather outlook released Sunday, August 3, in Abuja, NiMet predicted morning thunderstorms and moderate rainfall on Monday across Adamawa, Taraba, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina.

It said rainfall would continue later in the day, with high flood risks expected in Adamawa, Taraba, and Bauchi.

For the central region, light morning showers are expected in Benue, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa, with further rainfall anticipated in Nasarawa, Kwara, Plateau, and the FCT by evening.

In the south, cloudy skies and light rain are forecast in Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Anambra, Abia, Ogun, Edo, Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa. The agency warned that Oyo, Ogun, Edo, and Delta States are at high risk of flooding.

Tuesday’s forecast includes more thunderstorms and moderate rain across Taraba, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Kaduna, and Zamfara, while central states such as Niger, Kwara, and Benue will see intermittent rainfall.

By Wednesday, early thunderstorms and moderate rains are expected in Taraba and Kaduna, with isolated storms later in Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, and Adamawa.

The FCT, Niger, and Nasarawa are expected to see light rain throughout the day. Flood warnings remain in effect, especially for Bayelsa.

NiMet advised residents to stay indoors during heavy rain, disconnect electrical appliances, secure loose items, and avoid driving through flooded roads.

“Ensure warm clothing for vulnerable persons due to low night-time temperatures,” the agency warned, urging communities to activate emergency response systems where needed.

It also advised airline operators to obtain location-specific forecasts for safe flight planning and encouraged the public to check NiMet’s website for regular weather updates.
