Nine senators have officially switched allegiance to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), creating a significant political shift in the Nigerian Senate just over a year before the 2027 general elections.
The defections were confirmed on Thursday, March 12, 2026, when the lawmakers submitted their letters of defection during plenary.
The senators left a mix of parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), to join the ADC, signaling a strategic realignment in the upper chamber.

Notable defectors include Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto South) from PDP, Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South) from APGA, Victor Umeh (Anambra Central) and Tony Nwoye (Anambra North) from LP, Austin Akobundu (Abia Central) from PDP, Binos Yaroe (Adamawa South) from PDP, and Lawal Usman (Kaduna Central) from PDP.
Two additional senators also joined the party, bringing the total to nine.
Political analysts view the move as part of a wider repositioning by lawmakers aiming to strengthen their political prospects ahead of the 2027 elections.
While the ADC gains experienced legislators, the parties that lost members could face challenges in maintaining their influence in the Senate.
The mass defection underscores the ongoing reshaping of Nigeria’s political landscape, highlighting the tactical shifts politicians are making as they prepare for the next electoral cycle.
