The Nigeria Immigration Service has cautioned Nigerians against attempting to leave the country through illegal means or without valid travel papers, warning that doing so breaches immigration laws and could place travellers at risk.
In an advisory released on X on Monday, May 25, the agency, through its spokesperson, AS Akinlabi, reminded citizens that international travel must be done with approved documentation, including a valid passport, visa where applicable, and other required permits.
The service stressed that evading official border procedures or travelling through unauthorised routes amounts to illegal migration and violates Nigerian regulations.
The Immigration Service also expressed concern over fraudulent migration arrangements allegedly promoted by criminal groups targeting vulnerable Nigerians, especially young people, with false assurances of employment, education or improved living conditions abroad.

“These schemes often result in forced labour, human trafficking, and other forms of exploitation,” the service warned, adding that no legitimate travel process bypasses established immigration procedures or official border posts.
According to the agency, citizens should properly verify recruitment or travel opportunities through recognised institutions and avoid individuals or agents encouraging irregular migration practices.
It also advised Nigerians to alert immigration offices or security authorities whenever suspicious migration-related activities are noticed.
The NIS reaffirmed its commitment to protecting citizens from exploitation while maintaining secure borders and tackling illegal migration operations across the country.
