The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the Federal Government to adopt a more equitable approach to taxation, stressing that workers must have a voice in shaping any new tax policies.
In a Christmas message to Nigerian workers on Wednesday, NLC President, Joe Ajaero, said the country’s tax framework should be anchored on the principle of tax justice, where the wealthy and large corporations contribute their fair share, while policies that disproportionately affect low-income earners are scrapped.
Ajaero warned that tax laws crafted without the participation of organised labour would lack legitimacy, describing such policies as unfair and unacceptable to workers.

The labour leader also raised concerns about irregularities surrounding some tax regulations, alleging that distortions and instances of forgery in the process of developing tax policies could erode public confidence and undermine the credibility of government reforms.
According to the NLC, transparency and inclusiveness remain critical to building a tax system that promotes economic fairness and social stability.
