Nnamdi Kanu Fit to Stand Trial, Illness Not Critical — NMA

The court has confirmed that Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu is healthy enough to continue his trial, following a medical assessment by a team led by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).

Justice James Omotosho ordered the evaluation after conflicting medical reports emerged from experts representing both the prosecution and defence.

The team, whose report was submitted on October 13 by the prosecution led by Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), concluded that Kanu’s ailment is not life-threatening and that he is fit to stand trial.

With no objections from either side, the judge granted Kanu six consecutive days, starting October 23, to present and conclude his defence.

Kanu’s lawyer, Kanu Agabi (SAN), requested a private meeting with his client outside the Department of State Services (DSS) premises, citing fears that discussions could be recorded or monitored.

Justice Omotosho approved the request but stipulated that the meeting take place in the courtroom with only Kanu and his legal team present.

The consultation is scheduled for October 22, from 9 am to noon, giving Kanu and his lawyers time to prepare ahead of the trial’s resumption the following day.

This arrangement ensures that Kanu receives a fair opportunity to consult with his legal team in a secure setting while keeping the court fully informed.

The decision comes as the trial continues to draw national attention, highlighting the sensitive nature of the proceedings and the importance of due process.
