NNPC CFO Segun Pushes Energy Access At London Summit

The Chief Financial Officer of NNPC Ltd, Adedapo Segun, has called for urgent and pragmatic action to expand energy access across Africa, stressing that the continent must pursue development strategies that reflect its unique realities.

Segun spoke at the International Energy Week (IEW) 2026, held in London from February 10 to 12, where he joined global policymakers, industry executives, investors and technology leaders to deliberate on the future of energy security and transition pathways.

During a panel discussion on Africa’s energy future, Segun underscored the importance of prioritising access to affordable and reliable energy for African citizens.

He noted that while global conversations increasingly focus on decarbonisation, Africa’s minimal contribution to global emissions necessitates a balanced and context-driven approach.

He advocated leveraging green financing mechanisms to bridge the continent’s energy access gap, arguing that sustainable funding models can help African nations expand infrastructure without compromising environmental commitments.

Highlighting the importance of regional cooperation, Segun pointed to the African-Atlantic Gas Pipeline Project as a strategic initiative capable of strengthening energy security and fostering unity among participating countries.

He explained that such cross-border infrastructure projects are vital to unlocking Africa’s gas potential and enhancing economic resilience.

Segun also emphasised Nigeria’s vast gas reserves — estimated at over 200 trillion standard cubic feet — describing them as a critical asset that can be monetised to boost domestic energy supply and address longstanding revenue challenges.

According to him, developing the necessary infrastructure to harness these resources would not only improve power generation and industrial growth but also support broader fiscal sustainability.

The International Energy Week is regarded as one of the world’s leading energy leadership platforms, convening stakeholders from across the energy value chain to shape dialogue around security, capital formation, sustainability and the evolving global energy landscape.

Segun’s remarks reflect Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to position itself as a key player in Africa’s energy transition, while balancing development priorities with global climate considerations.
