NNPC Ltd Donates 35 CNG Buses to Boost Cleaner Transport in Nigeria

In a significant push towards a greener and more affordable transportation future, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has handed over 35 compressed natural gas (CNG) powered buses to the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG).

The symbolic handover ceremony took place at the NNPC Towers in Abuja on Monday, with the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, presenting the vehicles to Pi-CNG’s CEO, Mr. Michael Oluwagbemi.

According to a statement released via NNPC Ltd’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the donation is part of the company’s broader commitment to expanding gas utilisation in Nigeria and promoting cleaner, more cost-effective alternatives for public transportation.

“This milestone reflects a bold step towards reducing Nigeria’s carbon footprint, enhancing energy security, and providing long-term socio-economic benefits for Nigerians,” the company said.

NNPC Ltd emphasized that the partnership aligns with its strategy to support the Federal Government’s energy transition agenda and to deepen the use of gas as a major energy source.

Mr. Oluwagbemi, receiving the buses on behalf of the initiative, praised NNPC Ltd for the gesture, stating that the deployment of CNG buses marks a crucial move in making sustainable transport options accessible to ordinary Nigerians.

The Presidential Initiative on CNG, backed by the federal government, aims to significantly reduce the nation’s dependence on petrol by promoting natural gas as a cleaner and cheaper fuel alternative, especially in light of fuel subsidy removal and rising transportation costs.

This initiative comes at a time when Nigeria is exploring multiple avenues to cut emissions, diversify its energy mix, and cushion the economic impact of fossil fuel dependency.

“Through partnerships like this, NNPC Ltd. continues to lead the charge in accelerating the national gas expansion programme and powering the future with sustainable solutions,” the statement added.

The introduction of these 35 buses is expected to ease urban transportation challenges, reduce vehicle emissions, and provide an environmentally friendly model for mass transit in the country.
