The Alaafin of Oyo’s Palace has firmly countered assertions made by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, regarding consultations on the proposed rotation of the chairmanship of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs.
Reacting in a statement issued on the 15th of January, 2026, the palace described the governor’s claim that he met with the Alaafin, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, and the Soun of Ogbomoso on the matter as incorrect, stressing that no such engagement ever took place.
The statement, signed by Bode Durojaiye, Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, clarified that the traditional ruler was never involved in any discussion with the governor or other monarchs concerning the leadership structure of the council.
According to the palace, at no time did the Alaafin, Oba Engineer Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, hold talks with the governor or lend support to the idea of rotating the council’s chairmanship among traditional rulers.

“The Alaafin neither met with the governor nor endorsed rotational leadership of the council,” the statement said.
The palace further noted that the Alaafin’s position on the matter had already been officially conveyed to the state government through a memorandum submitted by the Oyo Council of Elders, which represents the collective view of key stakeholders in Oyo.
It emphasized that the memo remains the definitive and unchanged position of the Alaafin and the Oyo community regarding the leadership arrangement of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs.
