No Strike in Varsities, ASUU Still in Talks — FG Assures

The Federal Government has refuted reports circulating in some media outlets claiming that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has embarked on a fresh strike.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, emphasized that Nigeria’s public tertiary institutions remain operational and stable, crediting this to ongoing dialogue, mutual respect, and the government’s phased response to staff demands.

According to a release signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations in the Federal Ministry of Education, Boriowo Folasade, Dr. Alausa described the current calm in the nation’s university system as unprecedented in decades.

“It is not by coincidence that Nigerian public tertiary institutions have remained open and stable for the past two years,” the minister said.

“This is a reflection of our government’s unwavering commitment to maintaining cordial relationships with all stakeholders in the education sector. We are meeting demands in phases, and we are doing so respectfully and consistently.”

Dr. Alausa noted that the welfare of academic and non-academic staff remains a priority under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for Human Capital Development. He assured Nigerians that the administration remains committed to enhancing working conditions in the education sector and safeguarding the academic calendar.

“Our children are the heartbeat of the nation, and their uninterrupted education is non-negotiable,” he said.

“The Federal Government will continue to work closely with all unions in the education sector to ensure that the gates of our institutions remain open.”

He urged the public to disregard any misinformation suggesting an ASUU strike, reiterating that the current stability in universities is a joint achievement between the government and stakeholders — one that must be preserved.
