Veteran Nollywood actor Olusegun Akinremi, popularly known as Chief Kanran, has died just days before his 70th birthday. His death was confirmed on Friday morning by filmmaker Seun Oloketuyi through a social media post.

Akinremi was a respected figure in the Yoruba-language film industry, known for his expressive acting style, comedic brilliance, and cultural storytelling. He began his career in theatre after studying at the University of Lagos’ Centre for Cultural Studies, later earning a diploma in directing, acting, and film production from Obafemi Awolowo University. His breakout came with his portrayal of Alafin Kanran in a television revival by LTV-8 and Osumare Theatre, a role that gave him the nickname by which he became famous.

Over the years, he appeared in numerous stage plays, television dramas, and Yoruba movies, often portraying wealthy, influential, or traditional authority figures. Some of his notable works include Ejo Nla, Iku Lopin, Owo Blow, Aje Metta, and Baba Lukudi.

Despite his professional success, Akinremi faced significant challenges. Fires in 2003, 2016, and 2020 destroyed his office, studio, and equipment, halting his film production activities. In later years, he publicly appealed for support to revive his career, explaining that his greatest wish was to continue creating content rather than seek financial aid for personal upkeep.

Though details about the cause of his death have not yet been disclosed, tributes have been pouring in from colleagues, fans, and industry stakeholders, describing him as a consummate professional who left an enduring mark on Nigerian entertainment.
