In a recent interview on Arise Television, Professor Usman Yusuf, a prominent member of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), expressed concerns over President Bola Tinubu’s perceived lack of interest in addressing the nation’s security challenges.
According to Professor Yusuf, Tinubu’s words, deeds, and body language suggest a primary focus on economic matters, with security issues being relegated to a secondary status. He criticized the president for not taking a hands-on approach to security matters, asserting that the military has become unaccountable and independent.
Yusuf questioned the role of the Minister of Defence, accusing the president of outsourcing the security of the country to the military. He called for an independent judicial panel, led by a retired Chief Justice of Nigeria, a former defence chief, traditional leaders, and religious figures, to investigate incidents such as the recent bomb attack in Kaduna.
The NEF representative emphasized that the military cannot effectively investigate itself and highlighted the need for transparent inquiries to address security concerns.
The accusations raise questions about the government’s approach to national security and its commitment to ensuring the safety of citizens.
