The Oyo State Government has declared Monday, October 5, 2026, a work-free day for teachers across the state to mark this year’s Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Day.
The directive was issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Musibau Babatunde, and announced on Sunday, October 4, by Governor Seyi Makinde’s Special Adviser on Media, Dr Sulaimon Olanrewaju.
The government said the gesture recognises teachers’ contributions to education and human capital development, while allowing them to participate in activities marking the occasion.

It also reaffirmed its commitment to improving teaching and learning across the state.
The declaration comes months after teachers and pupils were abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15. The incident led the NUT to order an indefinite withdrawal of services by public primary and secondary school teachers from June 1.
The union suspended the action and directed teachers to resume on July 2 after engagements with the state government and assurances on improved school security. The abducted victims were subsequently rescued in July.
The work-free day coincides with World Teachers’ Day, observed annually on October 5 to recognise the contribution of teachers to education and society.
