OAU Dental Student Dies by Suicide After Release of Exam Results

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) community has been thrown into mourning following the death of a dental student who reportedly took his own life shortly after the release of his examination results.

In an official statement issued on August 13, 2025, the Obafemi Awolowo University Dental Students’ Association (IFUDSA) confirmed the incident, describing it as “the painful loss of a promising young mind” and a stark reminder of the mental health challenges faced by many students.

The association, led by its president, Adebayo Idris, extended heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, classmates, and all who knew him.

“We understand that this tragedy will leave many in shock, with questions and emotions that may be difficult to process. We encourage all members of our faculty to reach out to one another, offer support, and seek professional help when needed,” the statement read.

IFUDSA also reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for improved student welfare and mental health support within the association to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The bereavement announcement followed a public appeal for compassion, with the association stressing that mental health is just as important as physical health and that no student should feel alone in their struggles.

The tragic incident has renewed calls for Nigerian universities to strengthen mental health services and provide more proactive support systems for students under academic and emotional pressure.

As of press time, the university authorities had yet to release an official statement beyond the students’ association’s announcement.
